While Dracula is most popularly knows through Bram Stoker's novel as a blood thirsty villain terrorizing Transylvania, the original term is actually derived from a secret order of 15th Century knights. The evil thread weaved into the Dracul name likely was born by the Romanian prince, Vlad Dracula, or Vlad the Impaler. Vlad the Impaler fought viciously against Ottoman expansion in the mid 15th Century. Despite his professed Christianity, Vlad terrified rival clans and Ottoman enemies by impaling tens of thousands of captives, leaving them for his enemies to find still on their on their stakes.
